Gratitude in Action: A Message from Jamie Kolnick on the Holiday Spirit of Giving

Teaching Gratitude and Giving Back: A Fun and Powerful Lesson for Kids

One of my favorite moments running Jam with Jamie was in 2020. I know that may sound surprising, considering the pandemic brought the world to a halt. But something beautiful emerged behind the scenes of our company during that time. We were simply offering music with the spirit of giving back.

Our classes moved online and became complimentary, and our parties were donation-based, with all proceeds going directly to the performers—many of whom had no idea how they would make ends meet. Our mission was to be there for families, offering smiles and joy through music during such an uncertain time. There was something magical about the exchange of service, given without expectation, just to bring a little happiness into people’s lives. That spirit of giving reminded me of the important values my parents taught me growing up.

I wasn’t new to the world of non-profit work. My family runs a scholarship foundation in memory of my brother Alan, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 1998. It’s called the Epstein Reach for the Stars Foundation, founded by my parents, Murray and Cheryl. They poured their hearts into helping high school students—young people with incredible potential but limited financial means—achieve their dreams through education.

From a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of giving back in whatever way we can. It’s a lesson I continue to carry with me and one that I try to pass on to my own children. Though I’ll admit, it’s not always easy! My kids see the work I do with Reach for the Stars, as well as the community initiatives through Jam with Jamie. My hope is that by leading by example, they’ll take these lessons to heart as they grow. We also have a few fun, age-appropriate ways to show gratitude that I’d love to share with you.

Gratitude is so much more than just saying “thank you.” It’s about appreciating the people and moments that make life special. Here are a few fun ways to help your little ones practice gratitude this season:

  1. Gratitude Jar: Along with your family, take a moment to write down 5 things you’re grateful for this year and put them in a jar. Then, share them at your holiday dinner or around the table. This simple practice not only sparks meaningful conversation, but it’s also a beautiful way to reflect on what matters most and to remind everyone of the blessings we often overlook. It’s a wonderful tradition to start and can deepen your holiday connection as a family.
  2. Thank You Notes: Have your kids create fun thank you notes for friends or family—whether through drawings, rhymes, or silly messages. It’s a great way to encourage creativity while teaching appreciation. Also a fun gift for all the fam at Thanksgiving!
  3. Acts of Kindness: Encourage your kids to show gratitude by helping others—whether it’s sharing a toy or pitching in with chores. Actions speak louder than words! In our house, we have a points system: Ten points equal one dollar. There are plenty of ways they can earn points—getting dressed in the morning, cleaning up, or performing acts of kindness. A little $ incentive never hurts to get them started with the mindset! Eventually, they’ll learn to do it just because, but the points system is a good way to kick things off.
  4. Toy Giveaway: Have your kids go through their toys and pick out the ones they no longer play with or need. Then, take them to a local shelter or toy drive to donate. This is a wonderful way for your kids to experience the joy of giving, and it helps make room for all the new holiday toys coming their way! I always tell my kids that if they want new things, they have to part with some of the old ones. The real magic happens when they understand where their donations are going and feel the good vibes that come with helping others.

Gratitude and Giving Back are key to making this time of year truly special! I hope these ideas help you get started on building gratitude into your family’s holiday traditions.

If you feel inspired by our work with the Epstein “Reach for the Stars” Foundation, I would be honored if you’d consider supporting our mission. You can make a difference by donating to our foundation HERE. Every donation helps us provide scholarships to high school seniors who have big dreams but need a little financial help to achieve them.

Thank you for being a part of the JWJ Family and Happy Holidays!
