The Parent’s Survival Guide to Halloween Night (Written by a Mom Who’s Been There) + Family Costume Ideas

Halloween night is one of those parenting experiences that’s equal parts magic and mayhem. Between sugar highs, costume chaos, and the inevitable “Mom, I’m hot,” out of their inflatable suit. It’s the one night a year you question every decision you’ve ever made and yet somehow, it’s still my favorite.

This year, I almost divided and conquered. You know, one parent takes one kid, the other handles the other. Efficient, right? But then I thought… no. I am not ready to split up the fam on Halloween. Even if it means one of my kids isn’t with his close friends, we’re doing it together. It’s one night. He’ll deal.

Let’s talk costumes, because this is where things can really spiral. I’ve learned over the years that if you’re going to do it, go all in. Mouse ears? Out. Matching family themes? In. Some of our favorites have been Pokemon, Super Mario, Trolls, Coco, Daniel Tiger, and yes, one year we even did The Office, and it was EPIC.

The key? Pick something everyone feels excited about bonus points if it’s comfortable enough to survive a three-hour trick-or-treat marathon. Even better if they are under 3 and don’t care what you choose.

If I can offer any real mom advice for surviving Halloween night, it’s this: don’t try to do it all. You don’t need to hit every party, parade, or neighborhood. Choose one plan and stick to it. It’s already a chaotic night so simplify as much as you can.

When it comes to candy, every parent has their own system. There’s the Switch Witch (trade candy for a small gift), the Parent Tax (10% of all chocolate, non-negotiable), and the Hide It and Eat It Yourself method, which let’s be honest is the most effective. I once tried rationing it out, but somehow the “hidden” candy keeps disappearing.

If you find yourself halfway through the night thinking, why did I do this again?, take a deep breath. Laugh at the chaos. Grab your favorite candy bar and remember: it’s one night. The kids will crash, the sugar rush will fade, and you’ll end up with photos you’ll treasure forever (even the blurry ones).

When it’s finally over, you’ll be in that beautiful post-bedtime silence. Costumes half-off, candy wrappers everywhere, and maybe a glass of something festive in hand. That’s your parent victory lap.

Halloween doesn’t need to be perfect, so lean in and have fun!

Be the mom in costume. Eat the candy. Skip the second party. And remember, this is the good stuff!
